A dental assistant helps the dentist prepare for patients, hands the dentist instruments, aids in patient care, cleans and sterilizes instruments, and maintains all dental equipment.
A dental hygienist is the one who cleans the teeth. As a dental assistant, you help both the doctor and the hygienists provide optimal care to each patient.
Our dental assistant training program is 13 weeks long, including a 50-hour externship.
Yes! You will practice on your classmates at first, and then there will be an externship with a dental office where you will get even more hands-on experience.
Our program covers a wide variety of relevant topics, including:
- Passing instruments and supplies to the dentists
- Using suction devices to keep a patient’s mouth clear and dry
- Preparing materials properly
- Setting up and sterilizing instruments and equipment
- Removing sutures
- Preparing dental charts
- Applying topical anesthetics
- Applying bleaching agents and fissure sealants
- Removing stained and soft deposits from the clinical crown of a tooth
- Selecting and placing matrix bands during amalgam and composite resin restoration
- Placing dental dams
- Applying fluoride treatments
- Taking and developing dental X-rays
- Taking impressions of a patient’s teeth
- Obtaining a patient’s medical history
- Obtaining blood pressure and pulse
- Providing instructions on oral care and hygiene
- Handling medical emergencies and rendering basic first aid and CPR
We will assist you in finding your externship and can be of help during your job search, but we can’t guarantee employment.
You will need a Registered Dental Assistant license with a CPR certificate.
